Literature Text

Evelyn waltzed into the local candy shop, a grimace on her face and an empty lollipop stick in her mouth. She hadn't gotten a chance to replenish her stash of candy yet since her move here, and BOY did that need to be remedied. Since the death of her father, she'd been using them as a way to occupy herself when she was idle. In a way, she'd become almost dependent on them- though of course, she'd never admit that. That would mean weakness.

Slowly, she went around the store, grabbing a handful of empty plastic bags from a dispenser and carefully examining every single tray of candy in the store with a trained eye. These looked good enough, she supposed. Not the best, but sufficient enough.

Ana had been in the sweet shop for quite a while. Well, fifteen minutes but that seemed like a while to him. Mainly because he normally wasn't there so long before buying something and leaving. Today though.. Today was something special. Well, not really. He was just ordering a cake to be specially made. On top of that he had garnered two pounds of different hard candies to last him for the next couple of weeks... Though, it really didn't look like he'd be the kind of person to be in a place like this. He stood tall, proudly wearing his school's track uniform jacket.  Either way that was expectation and this was reality and in reality he was about to spend over twenty something dollars on cake and candies. How sweet.

Evelyn spotted a boy in the other corner of the store- well, how could she not, really, he stuck out so much that she didn't understand why someone that looked as emo as that was inside a candy shop. With a huge stash of hard candies, so it seemed. And...waiting for something? She wondered what exactly he was waiting for. Maybe he was getting something for his girlfriend. Though honestly she highly doubted that. How could anyone with such a 2008 haircut even have a girlfriend. It was silly.

Nonetheless, she was curious about the candies he had bought, after all, if he was going to buy so many maybe they were actually good? Evelyn grabbed a handful of sour gummy worms and shoved them into a bag, heading towards the boy. She was trying to see what flavor they were, or what type of hard candies they were at least, but to no avail. She grabbed another handful of candy- well actually, about 3 handfuls- this time of some assorted flavors of bubblegum, before finally approaching the stranger. “Hey, those candies- what flavor are they?"

Ana's cold eyes flickered across the store. There were a couple of people here and there but noone of any particular interest. His eyes rolled back up to the front of the store, focusing mainly on his precious cake. He was hoping it wouldn't take too much longer now.

His waiting was interrupted by someone coming over to talk to him. Slowly, he almost dragged his eyes over to the girl. She was actually as tall he was-- Good. He wouldn't have to be bothered tilting his head, such an invonvenience. "They're assorted." He said plainly. "Sorry, that wasn't too helpful I'm sure." He shrugged, turning his attention back to this wonderful cake being made almost in front of him. It wasn't too far in front of him. He could almost reach out and grab it. IF ONLY.

Evelyn pressed her lips together and narrowed her eyes slightly, almost irritated by the boy's obiviously emo attitude. So the haircut was actually a reflection of his attitude. How quaint.

“Ok, so fruit candies then?” She asked again, more certain that the candies had to be some kind of fruit flavor, since the only other hard candies she could think of were caramels, and there were only about a couple different caramel flavors and they didn’t necessarily make an assortment. “I’ve never been here before, I’m guessing they are good, since you have so many, yeah?” She asked. She wasn’t usually one for talking but candy was important enough for her to ignore her usual aversion to conversation. For now. “I’m, uh, Evelyn by the way. I just moved here."

Ana casually brushed his hair over to get a better look at his cake. They were icing it, yes good. Chocolate icing how wonderful he was so happy to finally have money to wast- SPEND WISELY. On things like cake. This moment would be made even more wonderful if not for the stranger who kept trying to talk to him or, whatever she was doing. "They're fruit flavored." He said aloud, though inside he was tacking on "now BUG OFF." But it would be rude to just plain old tell someone that. Gotta ease into it.

His lavendar eyes rolled over to the girl again. Oh dear this wouldn't go over well... He really hated sharing his name. "It's really a nice place." He remarked plainly before letting out a deep sigh, he honestly acted like this type of light conversation was physically taxing him. "Hi Evelyn." One could practically feel the smartass rolling off of his tongue at this point. "I'm Ana. I moved here a few months ago and /ohboy/ does this place blow."

Evelyn could just feel the sarcasm rolling off of this boy's tongue, prompting a quick, but rather obvious, frown and a glare from the girl. Her eyebrows scrunched themselves together slightly. If she wasn’t irritated before, she definitely was now.

What the fuck was his problem? She wasn’t being mean or even rather intrusive at all.  Wasn’t this how people introduced themselves? Wasn’t this how people were nice to each other? She didn’t quite get why this boy was being so….well, to put it simply, rude. Come to think of it, she was like this all the time. So she wouldn’t be so hard on the emo boy.

“Nice to meet you. I just moved here a couple days ago. Yeah, it does blow here, doesn’t it? Not exactly the prettiest town. But at least they have a candy shop, I guess.” Evelyn replied dryly, figuring that if he was going to be that way, she wasn’t going to expend the effort to be polite. She turned to the shelf of candy next to them and grabbed a large handful different flavored lollipops, sticking them in one of her empty bags. She then unwrapped one and stuck it into her mouth, shoving the wrapper into her pocket. One of the workers at the counter frowned.

Ana ignored the fact that this girl was frowning. He pretty much ignored the fact that there was STILL a girl next to him. Though she did catch his attention quickly. His eyes widened ever so slightly as she spoke, Ana realized she didn't mock his name oh joy what a miracle. He was always worried that people couldn't handle some profound revelation like his name. "Yeah it does have a sweets shop, I think that's pretty nice." He said in a less harsh sort of way. "I think the town is plenty pretty though." He said plainly. "I see a lot whenever we go running so I've gotten to see a lot of scenery." Huh. That sounded almost like conversation. Almost. If only to voice a contrary opinion.

Evelyn raised a brow. "Oh yeah, you're a runner. Almost forgot you were wearing the jacket. It makes you look like a pretty boy.” She commented, making fun of him a bit but not enough to consider it She had never been particularly fond of running before, since she was pretty bad at it herself- but that was before her wish. She wondered how good she could be at it now, if she tried. Probably one of the best, she would think. At least, if the Incubator wasn't some kind of liar. She let her mind wander on it for a moment before continuing.

“I haven’t been around much so I guess I can’t really say. I’ve been to the park, which I guess isn’t the best place I’ve seen but it’s got some charm to it. Where’s the good places? Other than here of course.” Nothing could beat the candy shop, in her opinion, at least not yet.

Ana looked down at the symbol on his jacket. oh. OH. He didn’t think anything about it, he always wore this jacket. Super comfy. He did scoff at her though. “I don’t need a jacket to look pretty.” If anything he had some kind of confidendce in himself. “Do you need a tour guide? I doubt I can help.” He said plainly, crossing his arms. “In all honesty I go to school, practice, and then home.” He was NOT one for doing things with others… there was the place where magi trained. GUUUUUH fuck that place. He hadn’t actually been yet but preemptive fuck that place. Besides there was no way this girl was a magi, right? Right. He zoned out for a second beforre blinking, looking at the girl and back at the cake guy. He was supposed to be talking or something. “Yeah so in asking me it’s the blind leading the blind.” He said with a shrug. “We could always go explore this hole in the wall together but we might get jumped for all I know.” He added with a snide tone.

Evelyn laughed a bit at that comment. "Hah! Sure." Well, he was pretty, but not overly attractive, in her opinion. She admired his confidence though. At his attitude towards her question, she became rather...well, angry. What the fuck man, she was being nice wasn't she? "Hey, I didn't ask you to be my tour guide. You said there were pretty places you've gone to when you were running, yeah? So I figured maybe you've spotted some good places. That's really all I was asking- though I guess I shouldn't have assumed you weren't such an antisocial pissbaby." She snipped, putting a hand on her hip and pulled the lollipop out of her mouth for a second. "Yeah, couldn't risk getting your pretty little face beat by some random thug, huh?" Evelyn knew he was being sarcastic about going and checking out some place but she couldn't help herself.

While Evelyn told him just how awful he was being, Ana pulled out his phone, totally ignoring her. Ana rolled his eyes over to the girl. He was almost physically pained to have to speak to her. “Look. I don’t know you. It’s weird when strangers decide to play twenty questions.” DAMN this girl was a complete ass. Or she was acting like one. It wasn’t making Ana any more friendly, that’s for sure. His eyes rolled back to his phone. “I make it a point /not/ to waste my time too.” He definitely wasn’t pulling his punches here. Though what was odd was his completely apathetic tone to all of this. While she was getting angrier, he just seemed to stay calm. “And yeah. You’re damn right I wouldn’t enjoy getting jumped. No sane person would.”

Evelyn snorted and just turned away, waving a hand dismissively and sticking her lollipop back into her mouth, walking to another shelf of candy and completely ignoring the other boy from now on. She wasn't going to waste her time with some emo prissy pretty boy- not anymore at least. She didn't want to end up kicking him or something and get in trouble...she'd promised her Aunt she would try to make an effort to get along with people. In Evelyn's book it usually meant casually ignoring them, even though she knew that in her aunt's mind it meant going out and making friends. But of course this was how things went. Lovely.
